"Being Good to the Environment Has Its Rewards"

Every year, Keep America Beautiful recognizes organizations that have displayed outstanding efforts in litter prevention, waste reduction, and beautification. Three years of participating with Cartridges for Kids ® has helped Daniels Elementary become a community leader in waste reduction and litter prevention, and it’s no wonder they are taking home a First Place National Award for the fourth year in a row!

Daniels Elementary models their environmental program after Keep America Beautiful’s three-tiered program. A committee of parents, teachers and community members regularly congregate to discuss potential environmental projects for the students at Daniels, which often include holding CFK contests and collection drives. As an ongoing project, students have adopted two local streets, and do four litter pick-ups each year. Proceeds generated by the CFK program support the environmental program and have more than doubled since the program’s inception in 2005, no doubt a result of the consistent efforts to keep recycling at the forefront of school activities.

Fliers are sent home at the beginning of each school year to encourage parents to participate. Fliers are also available during Back-to-School Night and Parent-Teacher Conferences. Every six weeks thestudents compete for the coveted Head-Over-Heels trophies, recycled trophies that are passed on to the winners of each six-week contest. Daniels Elementary has held an incredible variety of recycling competitions. Every six weeks is a new chance to win!

Contests vary from rewarding the student that brings in the most phones, to the classroom whose recycling weighs the most, and everything in between. Frequent winners make a concerted effort to

hang on to their trophies, and titles. Those without trophies try even harder to win them. The Head-Over-Heels trophies motivate each class to continually focus on recycling, CFK, and the environment. On top of these six-week contests and drives, they have sent pledge bags home with students two years in a row. Participants are rewarded with weekly raffles for a chance to win everything from school supplies to homework passes.

By being honored by the Keep America Beautiful First Place National Award, and by more than doubling their funds raised with CFK this year, Daniels Elementary proves that a little creativity, along with keeping recycling in the spotlight, can make your program truly shine!
